The Bundjalung people are celebrating the Federal Court's historic native title determination for land and sea around Byron Bay.

Native Title applicant Stanley Kay said the determination provided recognition for his people.

"I and others were given an obligation and responsibility by the Aunties and Uncles to stand up and speak for country, to speak for family," Mr Kay said.Today's historic event has been decades in the making, and many of the original applicants are no longer alive to celebrate. The agreement was a long held dream of late elders in Lorna Kelly and Linda Vidler, who were instrumental in negotiating an Indigenous Land Use Agreement of the area and gazetting of the Arakwal National Park in 2001.

National Title Services Corporation Chief Executive Nat Rotumah said today's determination was symbolically important, but in practical terms maintained the current land-use status quo."Native title is a recognition of people's rights and interests in lands and waters. It means [the Bundjalung] can continue to be sustained by the ocean, to go out and fish, and beach worm, get pippies — all those things we've been able to do, and now we're having a rubber stamp put on it giving us the thumbs up."

About time that the 'Board' get their Act together and not take twenty (20) years, in the future. I can tell by the delays that they have little care for what is claimed or the Lands' people, that they are working for. '20 years' wouldn't be tolerated if the tables were turned.

Hey its NTSCORP (or Native Title Services Corp) not National Title Services Corporation

great so now we have to pay an entry fee to go to Byron?!
