Doctors should hold off clamping the umbilical cords of premature babies to help give them the best chance to thrive in their critical first days of life.
The recommendations could reverse decades-old practice in which clinicians would immediately cord clamp to rush babies away to stabilise them, but the trend is slowly changing.
