The renowned West Australian landmark that was previously called the King Leopold Ranges after an 'evil tyrant' who enslaved African people, has now been renamed in honour of its Aboriginal heritage.

A renowned West Australian landmark previously named after an"evil tyrant" who enslaved African people has been renamed to honour its Aboriginal heritage.

It comes amid a period of global reckoning for historic injustices perpetrated by colonial figures, which has been fuelled by the Black Lives Matter movement. Leopold II is synonymous with Belgium's bloody history as a colonial power in central Africa who made the so-called Congo Free State his property between 1885 and 1908.Under Leopold II's rule there was corporal punishment, executions and rape.

"It has troubled me for years that an extraordinary area of Western Australia should be named in honour of a person who is widely regarded as an evil tyrant with no connection to our state," Mr Wyatt said.

Whoopee

Why not give credit to our creator? After all, he created you universe and humans.

Finally

Muslims are still trading in slaves, wheres your story on that?

Beautiful new name after this beautiful ranges

Finally!

I do wonder if many people know where the name/town Canberra came from. Glad that we got that right. Some would probably struggle with pronouncing indigenous words and some don’t even know they’re already speaking it.

haha people whingeing they can't pronounce Wunaamin-Miliwundi but they can pronounce Daenerys Targaryen

racists be like 'take me back to Constantinople' NO YOU CAN'T GO BACK TO CONSTANTINOPLE

Can you spell it phonetically for me please.

opa1420 Calling him an Evil Tyrant was being kind the term Crimes Against Humanity was coined to explain what King Leopold did to the Congolese People

flavina_

we need more of this♥️💛🖤

There’s an error in your article. They weren’t “originally called the King Leopold Ranges”. They’ve only recently been called that.

Yay!

Very good. It took long enough

It did make me laugh when at the announcement the pinhead politician stated the name change will likely increase tourism, yeah about as likely as me winning lotto.

What a load of crap

PhillipAdams_1 That is great news. I think we whites may need some education in how to pronounce it.

Bolt, Kenny, Jones and Dean just lost their collective tiny minds

PhillipAdams_1 I like it when Australia grows up.

If this keeps up everything is gonna have a silly name like wabba lubbba Jabba

i'll stick with what my ancestors called it. My culture, my choice. 🇦🇺

I vote we change SBS to just BS 👍

Really stupid ugly name and hard to remember and spell.

Im going call them 'Hitler ranges' now.

Is the aboriginal name a clean skin ? What’s the history , is it violent ? Oh that’s right , there’s no books .

Evil, gay tyrant.

All royalty is inbreed and none were kind to the people. They are and always will be a waste of money and space.

Let's rename Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart, Brisbane, Darwin and Australia to honour the local heritage and be done with those horrible relics of the dark past! Replacing English with an Indigenous language is also a great idea.

And what a beautiful new name it is

Harder to pronounce but better to name it something Aboriginal than some random bloke from Europe 😂 maybe add in a (pronunciation exact)

SBS relentlessly plugs the 'Noble Savage' myth, putting black people on a pedestal, whilst ignoring the fact that the African slave trade was run by and for African people - AND STILL IS. DefundTheABC DefundTheSBS

jot_au Awesome news. It was a shitty euro-trash name anyway.

Give it any name you want, still the same dirt

gdgoz That's welcome news.

Positive good news

I'm offended that it's being named after a barbaric culture that sexually and violently abuses their own children at a rate of OneEvery21Minutes tbh

That will close the gap for sure. Like renaming Ayers Rock.

Fantastic news. We now need to start renaming all our major landmarks to their local indigenous names.

Wrong again 🤦‍♂️

We had a landmark named after him? Why? Also 'enslaved African people' is a strange way to say enslaved, commited genocide, mutilated the families of slaves on his rubber plantations if they did not produce enough, and other crimes against humanity.

Lovely! Bloody about time. I bet Aussies will quickly shorten the name to something like UandMe. As an immigrant, I liked this about Aussies. They can say in three syllables what most people would say in eight.

deniseshrivell I thought King Leopold was so respected that the Europe only trusted him with the Congo. It is King Leopold II that was the evil king. I always thought the ranges were named after Leopold and not his evil predecessor. But the change is nice and respects our first nations people.

What a load of shit. Had it not been for a Soros hijacked BLM event in another country do you really think our indigenous brothers and sisters really give a shit ? Quite possibly, many aboriginals and Torres Strait islanders may be in favour of accepting history for what it is ..

Good start. Let's hope the renaming continues!

Wow I am completely overwhelmed

deniseshrivell Just flows off the tongue for a natural English speaker.

New name confirmed for Western Australia's King Leopold RangesThe Western Australian Government has confirmed the Kimberley landmark will now be known as the Wunaamin-Miliwundi Ranges. I don’t know much so I’d name it Briggs bathtub If anyone here reads into what King Leopold did, they'd find it perfectly reasonable that this renaming is taking place. That King did things that were indefensible, by the standards of both today and even his own time. It's gone too far now: next they'll be renaming Ayer's Rock.

Unspoken danger in buying more missiles to defend AustraliaOpinion: Long-range strike weapons could ultimately make Australia less safe by provoking counter-reactions - and not necessarily from China Ah, thinking two steps ahead. Not an LNP strength. Oh please! Why would anyone want to strike them unless they were a threat to begin with. Why should our Defence Force not have to weapons needed to defend our country and themselves. Appeasement. More worse.
