One of the nation's top economists says the longer Western Australia leaves its borders locked up, the more economic damage it will inflict on its neighbours.

John Paterson says the ongoing WA border closure is "putting enormous strain on families".

The NT and WA share a border across thousands of kilometres from Central Australia to the northern gateway to the Kimberley. "Particularly those who reside in Kununurra and may want to come over to the Northern Territory for the Christmas break," Mr Paterson said.
