A two-metre saltwater crocodile was released from a trap into a popular East Kimberley lake by a member of the public this week.A member of the public who released a trapped saltwater crocodile into a popular lake in Western Australia's north jeopardised the safety of the community, local authorities have said.
DBCA have been unable to determine who released the crocodile, an act East Kimberley district manager Brad Johnson said threatened the safety of residents on the water. "We can confirm it was tampered with because the main access gate into the trap was locked. The only gates that were left unlocked were the inspection gates," Mr Johnson said.
"It's really a concern that someone from our community was willing to take that risk and tamper with a trap where there's a likely chance of significant injury from an animal as powerful as a saltwater crocodile," he said.Mr Johnson said the release of any fauna without a licence or lawful authority could result in a fine of up to $5,000.
