It’s 11pm on referendum night and I’m waiting outside the ladies room for Australia’s richest person. My presence may have even caused her to take refuge in the hotel bathroom for a little longer than initially intended.
I’ve taken refuge in the lobby where at least I can overhear members of the public share their thoughts on the result or observe the odd inebriated hotel guest navigate back to their room. The last of the media contingent take our chances, waiting to ask the mining billionaire how she felt about the No campaign’s resounding victory. Once our presence is noted by her entourage, I’m expecting the security guard from earlier will reappear to tell us off for blocking a walkway.
