Voice a 'broken-record tactic' to distract us from government failings

Rather than spending all this energy discussing the merits of the Voice, our politicians should be doing whatever they can to address the real socio-economic issues blighting Indigenous Australia, writes Nicolle Flint.

Well, now we do, and that’s why an ever-increasing number of Australians are going to vote no, for an ever-expanding list of reasons, the latest of which should include the Prime Minister’s visit to New Zealand, and more shocking revelations from Western Australia concerning the impact of the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act.

These include an Indigenous “right to self-determination”, including “political status”, “autonomy or self-government”, their own “decision-making institutions” and “the right to a nationality” . For his part, Prime Minister Albanese must rule out a New Zealand-style response to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, including assuring Australians we will not be also pursuing a path of “co-governance” here, regardless of the outcome of the Voice referendum.
