Ms Bennett's mother, Colleen, regularly spoke of an affinity with the country. It was only when Ms Bennett started high school on the Central Coast that she began to unearth her true heritage."Like a lot of Aboriginal people, we don't have a lot of knowledge about it because we're all separated," she said. Her art has been the catalyst for filling in the blanks after her mother passed away two years ago.

Ms McLaren, who is from the Sutherland Shire and runs a Kamilaroi community Facebook page, said Ms Bennett was one of many people using the power of social media to retrace their Indigenous heritage.
