Victorian health officials have not ruled out strengthening coronavirus lockdowns as the number of infections surge across the state.

“We can’t rule anything out if there aren’t sufficient mechanisms to drive down transmission," Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said.

In the past 24-hour-period, 270 cases of the virus were confirmed in the state with concerns growing over the threat of outbreaks in aged care facilities. The Royal Melbourne Hospital set up a specialty ward in preparation for an influx of elderly patients after at least 80 aged-care staff and residents were diagnosed with the virus across 24 aged care facilities.
