Australian wines have appeared on a list of the world's best, and one of them is yours for $22, writes Des Houghton.

Morris Classic Liqueur Muscat from Rutherglen was praised in Decanter magazine for its “perfumed nose” and an inviting flavour profile spanning “caramelised sweet nuts, toffee, succulent dates, prunes and molasses.’’ The judges said an orange zest acidity balanced the muscat’s viscous texture.

The rich, dusty brown muscat is one of several fortified wines made from fruit from the family’s ancestral vineyard planted in 1859.Fifth-generation winemaker David Morris, 64, said his 94-year-old father Charles Henry Morris, known as Mick, helped him make the winning wine. In an extraordinary heritage story, David’s son Madden is now in training to become the firm’s sixth generation chief winemaker.Tip: Put it in the freezer for an hour and sip it cold.

The Hill of Grace had a “gorgeous floral lift” and a palate replete with “rich, ripe sculptured and slippery-smooth fruit so young and lithe it runs away from you, trailing deep notes of spice, black olive, dried herbs and ironstone minerals in its wake” the magazine reported. He said it was a great result that would enhance the reputation of wine from the Eden Valley, the Barossa, South Australia, and Australia generally.

An upstart wine from Western Australia also forced its way onto the Decanter hit parade when an expert panel at a blind tasting in London awarded 98 points to an independent, family-owned producer. The judges said Cape Landing Margaret River Blackwood Cabernet Sauvignon River 2019 was “highly perfumed” “elegant, refined pure”.Speaking from the Cayman Islands, Cape Landing owner Mark Lewis, a retired lawyer, said he knew the wine was good but was gobsmacked to find it in the same company as the Hill of Grace and some of the great champagne houses. Lewis, the son of a North London vicar, said his wine tasting began early when he took a swig of his father’s altar wine.
