In it stands a Premier who has just been told by his deputy chief health officer that he should lock his entire state down to stage four restrictions for an indeterminate amount of time.
The scene is set in July 2020. The health officer is Professor Allan Cheng, drafted from his major public hospital into the battle to fight Victoria out of its deadly second coronavirus wave. Allen Cheng now says he was too late to realise the importance of face masks and too late to call the hard shutdown.If it's true that if you ignore history you are condemned to repeat it, then Victoria had already excelled in repeating mistakes. Even Allan Cheng acknowledges that now.
We already had a great draft to work from. A highly successful outline had been completed by the excellent public health and contact tracing team in NSW in their response to the first wave, and a few terrific chapters were also penned by solid responses in other states and by other health departments.

Gladys, you DUMPED on VIC, treated us as the pariah state, treated us as lepers. Swallow your kool-aid and apologise BIG time to our friends, families and colleagues in Sydney who are now suffering because of your govt’s nonsensical sense of NSW exceptionalism!
But Gladys doesn’t do lockdowns… Total NSW exceptionalism… she’s made her own bed, with the total support of the PM for NSW, and sadly my family, friends and colleagues are now suffering….
Since the pandemic began we have acted like 8 different countries. We have different rules for lockdown, different rules for border closures, different rules for mask wearing and our state health authorities have a strange ability to ignore lessons learned in neighbouring states.
You can’t beat the virus with petulant arrogance….oh, and Cheng is a fcuking hero…
My heart goes out to our NSW colleagues. My wish is that they finally realise that there's no shame is saying you got it wrong, in asking for help and in swallowing your pride to learn and follow the lessons of others
Obviously NSW have learned from Victoria. The numbers in NSW with this current outbreak clearly show that. 👍
