Hotel stays for 2,000 homeless Victorians will continue until at least April 2021 as the state battles a second coronavirus wave.

The state government took the rough sleepers into vacant hotels at the start of the pandemic to help them isolate.

The government will lease 1100 properties from the private rental market and the first of 1000 new social housing units promised at the state election becoming available.Homelessness peak body, Council to Homeless Persons, says people staying in the hotels have been worried about their future and whether they could move into a real home.

The group welcomed the continued hotel scheme and move towards private rentals, but said investment in social housing needed to continue to help people once their private leases expire. Residents in metropolitan Melbourne are subject to stay-at-home orders and can only leave home for essential work, study, exercise or care responsibilities. It is also mandatory to wear masks in public.

💚 strategic thinking doesn’t seem possible in this time of panic but I’m glad people at least have this respite.

In Melbourne, there are currently around 60,000 vacant houses and a homeless population of around 25,000, 1.2K of which live in dwellings, tents or sleeping out. This means theres around 6 vacant homes for everyone 1 homeless person.

Wow... something from the SBS I can actually get behind.

At least we aren’t taking refugees right now , who inevitably jump the public housing queue . Maybe the homeless will be better looked after, the less we take from overseas .

Then what?

This is great news!

well at least something good came out of this...

Going to be years before I even think of visiting Melbourne again

Smart. Other countries have also solved homelessness by housing people. Surprising it's taken this long for governments to figure this out.

Enjoy!
