The Queen’s coffin will be driven to Westminster Abbey on the same gun carriage which was first used for Queen Victoria’s funeral and also carried the body of her father, George VI, wartime prime minister Winston Churchill and her beloved uncle Earl Mountbatten.will descend on London to pay their last respects to the long-reigning monarch alongside members of the royal family in one of the largest diplomatic moments of the century.
A palace spokeswoman said no details of the private service would be provided, which will take place after the morning’s state funeral at the Abbey followed by a committal service for past and present members of the royal household, including personal staff who work, or who have worked, on the private estates.
“These events are taking place against the backdrop of an outpouring of grief, affection and gratitude from people in the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth, and across the world – all united in paying tribute to the Queen’s life of dedicated service,” he said.“Let us be proud of how our country has come together in recognition of her remarkable legacy; solemnly, respectfully and with such devotion.
When the lying in state period ends on Monday morning, the coffin will be taken to Westminster Abbey on a 123-year-old gun carriage towed by 98 Royal Navy sailors in a tradition dating back to the funeral of Queen Victoria in 1901. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway and Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco have all confirmed their attendances.
