“A lot of media organisations don’t have particularly well calibrated progression paths, and that’s traditional in a fast news organisation ... but that’s got a massive downside, particularly for women,” she said.Women in media were not “shrinking violets”, Ms Fox added, but that there was “a lot of confusion about what is merit, how do you get ahead, and how long you’re meant to stay in a particular role” that men were less likely to feel insecure about.
She said many women working in news organisations left for communications roles, lured by not just the pay but the clearer progression pathways and better flexibility.The survey also flagged the pay inequality as a key issue stymying women’s progression. Eighty-four per cent of respondents called for organisations to, and Workplace Gender Equality Agency data showed women on average earn 16 per cent less than men in media jobs compared to 13.5 per cent across all Australian workplaces.
