Highly-regarded barrister Sandy Dawson, SC, who has been involved in some of the country’s biggest defamation cases, has died after a long battle with brain cancer.

He was engaged to represent Nine in the defamation action brought by Ben Roberts-Smith over reports inabout his service in Afghanistan. However, he was forced to withdraw two months before the opening of the trial in June 2021, due to ill-health.

Mr Dawson practised from Banco chambers, which issued a statement saying he “added colour and atmosphere to the Bar, at a time when real characters are becoming rarer”.It said he “never complained, or even commented on how unfair it was [to have cancer]“. “Many of us will have enduring memories of having to control bursts of laughter following a whispered quip from Sandy at the bar table, Sandy captivating the court, his later regaling colleagues with entertaining stories on return to chambers, or being witness to one of his hilarious impersonations.”Ms Bashir said the profession would “never forget Sandy’s fortitude and resilience during the Lindt siege, following Katrina’s death and at the lengthy inquest, all excruciating in turn”.
