Is it time to reconsider home quarantine for returning Australians?

She travelled to Melbourne to see her father when he was seriously ill. Now she's back in Perth and quarantining at home.

"At home you've got everything. And you're not a drain on any resource. No need for security guards."Ms Condron said the mental health benefits of quarantining at home were enormous. "Then there should be little risk from infected folk arriving, because the virus is unlikely to take off and spread much," he said.

HotelQ is unsafe, unhygienic, unworkable and unnecessary. HomeQuarantine is safest HomeQuarantine is simplest HomeQuarantine is fairest HomeQuarantine is only viable option. strandedAussies must not be arbitrarily detained into solitary, guilty till proven innocent.

Double standards... Australians in Oz who test covid19 positive get HomeQuarantine 👍 Despite testing neg before & after flying, strandedAussies are fined $3000+ & ARBITRARILY DETAINED into unsafe HotelQ solitary, guilty till proven innocent. 👎 RemoveTheCaps Auspol

Fuck that we are all a bunch of liars no way we should trust them

billisdoing The article lays out a lot of conditions for Home Quarantine, and they won't be met for many months yet. High vaccination rates, monitoring brackets, vaccinated travelers, low risk countries. We are going to need to find a way forward some time late this year - maybe this?

Yes definitely! Almost everyone in these comments has no idea the realities of hotel quarantine and the way people have been treated who have returned from overseas! There’s tech other countries are using to maintain safe home quarantine and IT WORKS!!!

migga At what point in time will travel happen from at least some overseas destinations without quarantining? Surely they’d have to look at it once the vaccination program has been rolled out and taken up by all who want it?

migga Nope, not a chance. People cannot be trusted to do the right thing, they only think of themselves.

ExemptPartners Yes it is. People seem to forget that there is tech available to keep people accountable. It has worked for countries as part of wider quarantine programs, time for us to move forward to help strandedAussies, reunite partnersapart & let InternationalStudentsAustralia back.

migga Don’t agree in the UK tried tested and failed miserably they moved to HQ - 30 percent never stayed in hone quarantine and unable to be located ?

Yes it is.

migga Yes. Why do we seem to trust Australians here who isolate but we can’t trust Australians flying in. At the very least it should be permitted for people coming from low risk countries- as they’re less risk to us than HQ workers.

migga Put an ADF guy with an AK47 on their doorstep

migga ABC ratings must have been up over COVID now they are looking for another outbreak and 4 month lockdown.

migga A thread. 1/n

migga No

Covid Treatment news - This is very important new information -

Upgrade the old quarantine station and place the arrivals there away from the population until deem safe to leave, hotel and home quarantine doesn't work

No.

Humans are fools that require direction. Send them home to quarantine and you can guarantee that they will head out to shop, to visit friends, to party.

how about thinking out.of the box why do pepole.need to come obligations.others becase they no longer have work and need to come home to survive why does not the federal govt support citizens by paying a they stay away?

No trusted enough , people will leave their house

Impossible as long as we have people $h1t their pants after seeing a couple of cases and megalomaniac premiers trying to lockdown the states as they wish with the support they are getting from sheep.

Only if they have been vaccinated or they live in QLD or WA!

No. It’s time for the federal government to do more on international quarantine and get more people home. People can’t be trusted to do the right thing, it’s been proven.

No, no, no,no,no,no & NO.

No because it is sadly evident that not all will comply with quarantine requirements. That’s not to say I don’t feel for the majority who will.

Home quarantine ? A joke right ? Can you trust ppl not to go out side of their home ?

Great idea

Is it time to reconsider the fed govt we have in power and how they run from the quarantine responsibility?

If we can get a flight back that isn’t cancelled or breaks the bank,we’d have access to an empty 3bedroom house on a 1/4 acre plot,15min drive outside the town, groceries delivered&happy to quarantine for 14 days no contact with the outside world, give me the bracelet tracker!

No

kathylord2 you really should get comment from Singaporean Ministry of Health officials themselves as well as their epidemiologists like profdalefisher not just those based in Australia

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooose

Bear in mind also that quarantine is 10 days in other countries - it’s also 10 days in Australia for cats and dogs 🤔

If they could monitor it successfully, I’d be very happy to quarantine at home. I’d just be happy to be in my own home after a year and wouldn’t dream of putting anyone at risk.

NOOOOOOOO

we need experts that have common knowledge and sense as these ones have none of the above

We need new experts as obviously they sitting behind desk have no idea that main causes of transmission

Yes with an ankle monitor

No! Definitely no

We're doing so well... Let's fuck shit up!? No thanks!!!

please keep your dangerously stupid ideas to yourself.. we dnt need more lockdowns

Not until bulk of vaccinations have commenced.

That is point to be appreciated. Thank you so much for concerning and addressing international students. ScottMorrisonMP have to think about the expansion of vaccine rollout, compulsory quarantine and opening border as soon as possible. 🙏🙏

I did home quarantine and did the right thing yet all I heard about were others selfishly flaunting the rules, shopping whilst unwell or not being at home when checks were made. Unless the can guarantee otherwise, this is a most dangerous and stupid point to push.

No

One of the first cases here in Tasmania was a Brazilian student who had just returned for study. Probably a good person but they spent a whole day with symptoms hanging out in the uni library. NO. People justify to themselves to do what they want regardless of others.

It’s so disappointing to see the lack of empathy in these comments. Fear really is a toxic emotion.

One word. NO. Sorry I yelled. We know home quarantine is not able to be perfectly policed. Every state has had people leave to go shopping. Some new variants are much more transmissible via aerosol. NO NO. Stupid idea.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha. No.

No they can't be trusted

sooner more good news to come

Keep them in quarantine! They can blame the previous selfish rule breakers for it😄

NO NO NO

Lol yeah right, no chance of that working. Too many morons

Not with the amount of new COVID19 strains coming in the country right now.

Yes !!!

I’ll pay for an ankle brace ... so Dutton is able to control my every move. Taking away the right to leave and enter your own country at free will is what communist nations did between 1955 and 1989. Unacceptable!

hell no

Judging by the amount of people going to work when they’ve caught a cold and then telling people ‘it’s just a cold, I don’t have Covid’ and not getting tested - I’d say no to home quarantining. Clearly people can’t be trusted and are selfish.

For vaccinated Australians, yes

No

Yes. They rolled out the completely useless COVIDSafe app, how hard can a tracking system be? Taiwan and HK do it. Saves the gvt money in hotel security, saves the poor returners money & the hell of awful solitary confinement with no fresh air

Need some plan, but I wouldn't trust them without a tracking implant

Yes. Because if we trust confirmed local positives to isolate at home and obey the rules then requiring vaccinated returning Aussies to be detained in a hotel because 'they cannot be trusted' is simply stupidity. Home quarantine with electronic monitoring is sufficient

Ummm, have a look at Auckland ?

Plain No.

Yes. Taiwan (same pop. as Australia) had theirs operational by April last year and have put roughly double the number of people thru home-q that we have put thru hotels. And far more safely.

Yes definitely. Ankle trackers are an option.

No because they will infect others in their homes and those that bring them supplies. Complacency is the last thing we need. Stick to what works. Stupid question and idea it forgets we are living in a bubble but the world is not.

Not yet. Not until the population is fully vaccinated. Home quarantine has no guarantee of compliance.

Nope.

NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

No it’s not. Virulent stains of COVID are entering the country, still transmission in hotel quarantine! Return travels/residents require supervised support. A small portion of the Australian population have had an Pfizer vaccination, still need another. AstraZeneca roll out ...

No

It’s time to defund the ABC

SkilledStuckOverseas can return to Australia by home quarantine and covid application ScottMorrisonMP GregHuntMP

Yes

Residents vaccinated here and travelling overseas should be able to quarantine at home on return to Australia

If hotel quarantine is not foolproof then how home quarantine will be safe ?!!!

No, definitely not!

I think its time the federal government lived up to its constitutional responsibilities

Yes. With 'bed checks'... hotel quarantine has proven too risky as a source for spreading the virus. Best to minimise the people in that version of quarantine.

Probably time to consider stopping all travellers into Australia, citizens or not until the vaccinations are completed, people can't be trusted to do the right thing and while it may only be a few that is all that is needed to kill hundreds.

Not unless they are Pfizer vaccinated 4 weeks before returning! Send vaccines to them! No HQ required then also! Saves $$ and they can self- isolate get tested at home! COVID19Aus auspol

Not a good idea. There will be folk who don't follow the rules.

No!!!!!!

No

Hell no. Joking?

No

Fuck no

No

For a minute I thought this was an old article, from July 2020 or around then. Because ScottMorrisonMP promised all the strandedAussies would be home by Christmas 2020. It’s now March 2021. WTF has the PM been doing?!!? COVID19Aus auspol ScottyFromMarketing

Experts should keep up. The UK, with its ultra-successful vaccination roll-out, is about to become a low risk country

Just got to pop out to the shops ....

Yes of course that should happen. In the era before vaccines, hotel quarantine made some sense. But the minute the most vulnerable have been vaccinated, monitored self-isolation becomes feasible.

That's a definite NO! Still too high risk while vast majority of country still not even vaccinated yet.

Stupid question. NO. Is the article worth reading based on that question? NO.

No

I invite people to look at the Korean system and suggest perhaps we adopt a modified version of that: People can be kept in quarantine facilities for the first 48 hrs until the PCR tests come through, and then split off as needed.

Good article, with some very valid points. In my opinion (for what it’s worth) returning overseas travellers that, have been vaccinated, should be able to quarantine at home. Those without a vaccine should be in controlled (aka hotel like) quarantine zone

No, No, No & more No's. With all the variants we are now seeing, we cannot trust home quarantining. It will only tske one stupid idiot and everything we have achieved will be undone.

With ankle bracelets sure

OMG! After the way they didn't stay home the first time! And this will be with more pernicious strains as well.

_racheljimenez

Explosive ankle bracelet. Move X meters away from the base and it blows up. That will keep them at home.

We did it about a year ago and followed to the letter. Cops came round to check too.

It’s less than 3 months since the Avalon outbreak started due to airline staff who were meant to be quarantining at home, resulting in 1000’s of families being separated for Christmas including elderly in isolation at retirement village.

Sure...you obey the rules to stay at home. That’s not gonna stop your mom coming for a visit.

Nope. People cannot be trusted.

Will the ABC stop it’s ridiculous push to break the current CovidSARS2 controls - seems journalists cannot contain themselves. People go through hotels or don’t come here!

No, people won’t listen. Or they don’t understand what it means

No. People can’t be trusted.

No

NO WAY they can not be trusted we dont have the man power checking them everyday or hour Let them rot in London

Almost a quarter of 2021 has gone & if still they are thinking about their stranded Aussies, it's nothing but shame on Federal Government. If Hotel quarantine is not working, why PM ScottMorrisonMP is not thinking about the other option. Listen to IEAAustralia & PhilHoneywood

No

Is this some sort of sick joke by our state run media? Borders should be shut completey for everyone until we are all vaccinated. We don't want more lockdowns or virus here.

NOOOOO!!!!!!

No because we are selfish bastards who won’t stay home

Ask the people of Sydney’s Northern Beaches as to how that works out.

Your kidding right, if one thing we learnt from last time is you can’t fix stupid and you can’t quarantine it either

No.

An obvious yes if they are coming from a low risk country and have the appropriate controls in place. Singapore is an example of how it can work.

variants

No

Every policy practitioner knows that implementation never survives the introduction of the human element i.e people are selfish and act in their own interests rather than the interests of the collective. So, that’s a no. A risk matrix supports the negative.

No way! Victoria will be in lockdown again!

no shit. but have EXTREME penalties for those who defy orders. IMMEDIATE jail time

No.

Nope. A lot are either selfish, dickheads, lack insight or are a combination of all 3; in no particular order.

As an Australian overseas and this is a real consideration for me, No. Unless appropriate controls are in place, Australian’s have shown we can’t be trusted to follow the process.

absolutely...I would rather have an electronic bracelet tracker than be stuck in an airless room...and I did home quarantine in March last year, most people are trustworthy, not the other way around.

Yes with ankle bracelets. Otherwise no. Hotel quarantine was brought in because people thought the rules didn’t belong to them.

Yes.

Especially those returning who are already vaccinated OS

If they pay for a police officer maybe

No

As long as they STAY HOME there shouldn’t be any problems...but past actions by some Australians already here leads one to think that not many will do the right thing...call me a cynic if you want, but if a third wave breaks out, you know who to blame

No. Unfortunately, some people can't be trusted ('oh, I'll just slip out', or 'bugger it, I'm doing my thing, stuff everyone else').

NO Is it time to consider using Military bases for Quarantine YES

No cant be trusted

NO

No, leave it as-is.

Yes. With ankle bracelets.

Unfortunately we can’t trust them ankle bracelets are great to tell where they have been but won’t stop them from leaving home

NOOOOOOOO they do not comply they cannot be trusted

No.

Yes it is! It works for many other countries...like Canada!

It is time for the Federal Government to take some responsibility for quarantining returning Australians?

12 hotel quarantine in NSW TODAY, you want those numbers out in the community?

Of course it is. And quarantined people should be able to go to work each day and visit friends, go to ABC offices, go to weddings, partie, and.......funerals. It's their right.People can be trusted, and you know it.

Yes.

Simple answer - NO! Could you imagine how many variants would be escaping into the community. Not sure who is canvassing this, but they fail to get once covid19 greets Winter again, it is going to be extremely difficult to contain. strandedAussies

remind me again how quarantine isn't the responsibility of the federal government?

Can’t be trusted as proven months ago

No

Only if they have jabs (well, not the China ones of course).

NO because we cannot trust people to do the right thing

Lolz

It's the circle of news And it moves us all Through despair and hope Through faith and love 'Til we find our place On the path unwinding In the circle The circle... The circle of news.

No way, people has no respect with the rest of the population. The hotel quarantine was put in place because people could not follow the restrictions and stay at home for 14 days.
