Using terror laws against accused Christchurch gunman Brenton Tarrant could fuel his ability to grandstand in court, according to the only lawyer to lead a case under New Zealand's anti-terrorism law.
"You've got 50 people killed and probably 10 times that number directly affected so it will be a long trial and will be unduly traumatic for everyone." He said terrorism charges would likely prolong the trial. With murder charges, only two things had to be proved - whether the accused did it and whether it was his intention to kill.
A potentially unusual feature of a defence case might emerge from the very public nature of the shootings.
I think there should be a suppression order on the trial and sentencing hearing. He wants notoriety and a platform. Deny him.
There’s a lesson here for grandstanding national security politicians evervramping up the ante for their political advantage NOT public safety.
I reckon they're right. Charge him with 50 counts of murder, add in how ever many wounded there are as attempted murder charges and whatever else they can throw at him too. Mass murderer won't suit his agenda.

My vote is to prioritise victim's family over the need for correctly categorising the charge. Charge him with murder, less stress for victims, less tax funds and time spent to prosecute, less uncertainty...
