The warning from the US comes as Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny faces an increasing risk of kidney failure after more than two weeks on a hunger strike while in prison.

President Joe Biden's national security adviser says the US government has told Russia "there will be consequences" if Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny dies in prison.Mr Navalny faces an increasing risk of kidney failure and his vision is deteriorating due to his hunger strikeRussia jailed the opposition politician for two-and-a-half years in for parole violations he says are fabricated

According to his representatives Mr Navalny, an opponent of Russian leader Vladimir Putin, is facing an increasing risk of kidney failure and his vision is deteriorating after more than two weeks on"We have communicated to the Russian government that what happens to Mr Navalny in their custody is their responsibility and they will be held accountable by the international community," national security adviser Jake Sullivan told US media.

"In terms of the specific measures that we would undertake, we are looking at a variety of different costs that we would impose and I am not going to telegraph that publicly at this point, but we have communicated that there will be consequences if Mr Navalny dies," he added. Mr Navalny started refusing food on March 31 to protest a lack of proper medical treatment for his leg and back pain while in prison. It comes as his allies say they are planning what they hope will be the largest street protests in modern Russian history this week to highlight Mr Navalny's declining health and a crackdown on his supporters.

"Things are developing too quickly and too badly," they wrote in a statement on Navalny's website, announcing their plans for nationwide protests.Space to play or pause, M to mute, left and right arrows to seek, up and down arrows for volume.
