The Moderna coronavirus vaccine is part of the America's ambitious plan to vaccinate 20 million people by the end of the year against COVID-19, which has claimed more than 310,000 lives in the US.

The United States has started shipping doses of the second approved COVID-19 vaccine to thousands of healthcare facilities around the country.The US plans to deliver 5.9 million Moderna and 2 million Pfizer shots this weekThe Moderna COVID-19 vaccine received emergency useDistributor McKesson Corp said it had begun shipping out Moderna's shots and ancillary supply kits to administer the vaccine.

The distribution of Moderna's vaccine to more than 3,700 locations in the US will vastly widen the rollout started last week by Pfizer.But an ambitious target to get 20 million Americans started with their first shot of the two-dose vaccine regimen before the end of the year could slip into the first week of January, US Army General Gustave Perna said.Shipments will start reaching healthcare providers as soon as Monday, General Perna said.

The start of delivery for the Moderna vaccine will significantly widen availability of COVID-19 vaccines as US deaths caused by the respiratory disease reached more than 310,000 last week in the 11 months since the first documented US cases.
