US politicians have had to clarify their willingness to build nuclear submarines for Australia.

| A bipartisan group of US politicians has hit back at comments from the heads of the US Armed Services Committee that suggested the AUKUS submarine program could jeopardise the America’s own defence ambitions.

In their letter, the coalition says “the potential for America to help supply Australia with a new submarine fleet under AUKUS is far from the ‘zero-sum game’ some have portrayed it as”. “Importantly, AUKUS also lays the foundation for the most significant integration of our undersea and other military capabilities ever achieved. I am encouraged by the progress our nations have made.

“The 2023 National Defence Authorisation Act included an unprecedented $US768 million [$1.1 billion] for submarine industrial base support and workforce development – including $US541 million for supplier development and shipyard infrastructure, and $227 million for submarine workforce development.
