The world has watched in horror as American burns – but two countries are “crowing with joy” as they use the unrest to solidify their own power.

They see army helicopters using counter-insurgency intimidation tactics, hovering directly above protesters heads.What about freedom of protest?What about the rights and protections detailed under the US Constitution?President Donald Trump threatened protesters with martial law.

“I think the Chinese Communist propaganda apparatus is very grateful to have some burning cities in the United States right now after having had to suffer and feel deeply humiliated by the spectre of Hong Kong being in a state of chaos,” Asia Society Centre for US-China Relations director Orville Schell says.

It is trying to present a picture of law, order and calm. Not to mention total public support. It’s easy to do this when all media is state-controlled, and even social media activity heavily censored. It just isn’t necessarily true.
