The two senior commanders on a coronavirus-stricken aircraft carrier did not "do enough, soon enough" to stem the outbreak, the US Navy's top officer has said, a stunning reversal that upheld the firing of the ship's captain who had pleaded for faster action to protect the crew.
More broadly, it put out of commission a massive warship vital to the Navy's mission of countering China's power in the Asia-Pacific region.Admiral Gilday said at a Pentagon news conference that Mr Crozier and Mr Baker "failed to tackle the problem head on and take charge", as the virus spread throughout the ship, and their actions "fell well short of what we expect" of those in command.
He said investigators were unable to determine who among the crew was the first person to be infected.Mr Crozier's initial firing upset the carrier's crew and he received cheers and applause as he walked off the ship. Interviews with Mr Crozier and Mr Baker cited in the investigation report revealed confusion, conflict and poor communications among the leaders, their commanders across the fleet and in the Pentagon.
The US Navy will reap the result of this by seeing a drop in recruitment and a rise in discharges.
Given someone close to retirement, there can be little doubt that Admiral Gilday has been got at. Given a choice, tow the official line,or leave with a reputation in tatters. Disgusting! The USN is the poorer.
How about Trump?
I’d imagine the 4,800 chew disagree with these findings. Captain Crozier showed true leadership & care for his crew & because he embarrassed the inept establishment, he’s being made to suffer.
Sad day
THIS STINKS TO HIGH HEAVEN!
this is terribly disappointing. I knew the announcement wouldn't be made until after the West Point commencement but hoped it would be a fair call.
