Two days of discussions concluded on the same day the US increased tariffs on $270 billion dollars of Chinese goods from 10 to 25 per cent.

Trade talks between the United States and China have proven fruitless, ending on Friday without a deal. China is expected to retaliate, prompting fears the 10-month trade war between the world's two largest economies could worsen and create further global economic instability.

President Trump has taken to Twitter, describing the talks as 'candid and constructive' and adding that they would continue in the future. His social media posts prompted a slight recovery in the US markets after shares on New York's S&P index were on track for their biggest weekly fall of the year because of the talks.
