| Australian and US ministers meeting in Washington this week should consider allowing Japan to join the AUKUS pact to better prepare for any conflict between China and Taiwan, geopolitical experts have urged.
The report, co-authored by CSIS Australia chair Charles Edel and 24 other experts, said the talks should consider both allowing Japan into AUKUS and preparing studies into how Japan can be involved in responses to any invasion of Taiwan by China, which considers the self-governed island part of its territory.
“This review could posit different contingencies, from a full-scale Chinese invasion, to a more limited use of force, to the imposition of a blockade.”
