The United States and South Korea have announced they will scrap huge annual military drills that North Korea has long viewed as invasion rehearsals.The cancellation of the drills is also being seen as an olive branch to North KoreaThe move is aimed at reducing tensions on the Korean peninsula and, according to the Pentagon and South Korea's defence ministry.
Acting US Secretary of Defence Patrick Shanahan and South Korean Defence Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo made the decision to end the Key Resolve and Foal Eagle war games to"support our diplomatic efforts to achieve complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula", the Pentagon's statement said. The move is an olive branch to North Korea, but some experts say it will likely weaken the allies' military readiness amid worries that tensions erupt again in the wake of the failed nuclear summit in Vietnam.
