People living in an inner-city Melbourne suburb are on high alert after an ‘unexpected’ Covid-19 detection.

Acting chief health officer Ben Cowie revealed the “unexpected wastewater sample detections” in the Camberwell area on Thursday morning.“People in the Camberwell region, if you have the mildest of symptoms, please go and get tested for Covid-19,” he said.

The health department said the wastewater detection could be due to someone who had Covid-19 but was no longer infectious and continued to shed the virus – or it could be due to an active but undiagnosed case in that area. “The wastewater testing program is designed as an early warning system, and a cautious approach is always taken when these detections are found,” the department said.

The mystery case worked at a drive-through testing site at Moonee Valley racecourse in Melbourne’s northwest and returned a positive result on Wednesday morning. The positive case worked two shifts while infectious and all staff at the now-closed site during that time had been sent home to isolate. The Party Games newsletter
