Update after surfer killed at popular beach

Homicide detectives investigate stabbing of Kye Schaefer , 21, at Coffs Harbour beach after morning surf

About 6.40am on Thursday, emergency services were called to Ocean Parade in Coffs Harbour following reports a man had been stabbed. Kye Schaefer, 21, was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Coffs Harbour Base Hospital for treatment, where he later died. A crime scene was established before the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad took control of the investigation under Strike Force Kooringaroo.As investigations continue, strike force detectives are appealing to identify a man riding a bicycle in the area at the time of the incident.

Detectives are also appealing for witnesses – or anyone who may have dashcam footage – in the vicinity of the Coffs Harbour Surf Club and the Orlando Street area at the time of the incident.One Aussie state is a step closer to introducing a major overhaul to knife crime, sparked by similar laws in Queensland after the horrific stabbing death of a teenager.
