Australian universities will be banned from enrolling foreign students if the education institutions exceed their student caps, under robust new laws aiming to force down overseas arrivals while delivering “sustainable growth”.

Australian universities will be banned from enrolling foreign students if the education institutions exceed their student caps, under a raft of new reforms introduced to parliament.

Education minister Jason Clare introduced the Education Services for Overseas Students Amendment Bill in parliament on Thursday. Picture: Liam Kidston “These are to make enrolment limits by legislative instrument, or by individual notice, for providers,” Mr Clare said. When setting limits, the education minister will also take into account the supply of purpose-built student accommodation available to both domestic and international students. It comes merely days after the Albanese government faced backlash for its plan to introduce student caps from January.

Universities Australia, the peak body for the tertiary sector, issued a press release on Saturday saying “certainty, stability and growth” were needed in future policy.
