The ACTU want the Albanese government’s jobs summit to endorse rights that allow workers to strike across multiple employers to lift pay.

Unions will push for the jobs summit to endorse sector-wide bargaining rights that allow workers to strike across multiple employers to lift pay, in a proposal previously attacked by business as a return to 1970s-style bargaining.

“The idea that a childcare worker at one childcare centre can negotiate with their employer to get better wages is fanciful and it’s not happening,” she said. Coles Group chief executive Steven Cain said on Wednesday that fixing the enterprise bargaining system and simplifying awards would be key to lifting wages.

But Ms McManus said many employers were “crying out” for sector-wide bargaining because it would provide conditions that made sense to their sector and that were not provided by the award. Sector-wide bargaining exists in other countries, such as Germany, Denmark and Sweden, and is currently being proposed in New Zealand where unions would need to represent 10 per cent of a sector to bargain across employers.

Union demands at job summit will centre on collective bargaining: McManusWorkers and their union representatives would be allowed to negotiate deals on pay and conditions with multiple employers at once and sometimes across entire sectors, under proposals the trade union movement will take to the Albanese government's upcoming jobs summit. How about looking after your members who have lost jobs because of no jab no job policies? Unions are a joke. Will Sally set up a needle deployment unit at the meeting. Past behaviour says 'yes'!
