The nation's unemployment rate slipped slightly to 5.2 per cent in September due to a small fall in the proportion of Australians looking for work.

The result means the economy has now recorded three years of unbroken jobs growth. The last time the number of jobs fell in a month was August 2016.Total employment growth was driven by women with the number of men holding down a job falling by 6700 through the month. The more stable measure of trend unemployment stayed at 5.3 per cent.

Elsewhere, it rose slightly in Queensland to 6.5 per cent, fell by 0.1 percentage points in WA to 5.7 per cent, dropped by 0.2 percentage points in Tasmania to 6.2 per cent, rose to 5.6 per cent in the Northern Territory and remained steady at 3.5 per cent in the ACT. "In these circumstances the lower unemployment rate is unlikely to lead to an acceleration in the pace of wage rises; those that have left the labour force can easily re-enter when conditions improve."
