Underworld figure Sam Ibrahim to be deported following prison release

The federal government will move to deport underworld figure Sam Ibrahim to Lebanon as soon as possible after he is released from prison in the next week.

Ibrahim, the brother of Kings Cross identity John Ibrahim who was not involved in the offending, has been in prison since 2014 for conspiracy to supply guns. He was granted parole on Tuesday morning but will be immediately transferred to immigration detention because his permanent residency visa was cancelled following his arrest.Credit:Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton cancelled Ibrahim's visa in 2015 on character grounds. Born in Lebanon, Ibrahim has lived in Australia since he was four.

An Australian Border Force spokeswoman declined to comment on the individual case but said the government took seriously its "responsibility to protect the Australian community from the risk of harm posed by foreign nationals who engage in criminal conduct" or behaviour of concern.She said foreign nationals without a valid visa were liable for detention and removal pending resolution of any ongoing processes with the government or courts.

"Removals of non-citizens have not stopped as a result of COVID-19, however have significantly slowed since March 2020 due to the availability of commercial flights and the travel restrictions," the spokeswoman said.that Ibrahim would be removed from Australia as soon as practicable after he is released from prison.A former Parramatta chapter president of the Nomads bikie gang, Ibrahim was sentenced in 2018 to a nine-year jail term, backdated to December 2014.
