A former police officer who killed at least 36 people in north-east Thailand – including 24 children – had consumed drugs before embarking on his horrific murder spree, his mother told police.
Kamrab, who was sacked from the police force in June after being found with methamphetamine, had faced court on drug charges earlier on Thursday and was due back to hear the judgment in the case on Friday. Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida will reportedly travel to the province on Friday to meet with victims of the massacre and relatives of those slain, as will Thailand Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.
Rescue workers had earlier brought the bodies of the victims to a local police station and placed them into the coffins as medical staff stood by solemnly and relatives of the dead gathered, some wiping away tears.“Nobody wants this to happen. It’s a scene that nobody wants to see. It’s harrowing,” said Piyalak Kingkaew, who led the rescue team that was the first to arrive.
