Almost 200 Australians stranded in riot-stricken New Caledonia have their bags packed to leave the French Pacific Territory at a moment's notice.

New South Wales holidaymakers Jason Desmond, his wife Ashleigh, their six-year-old son Hudson and four-year-old son Alfie were due to fly out of Noumea last Tuesday but they have been stuck ever since.

"We are fortunate to be in a safer part of Noumea with strengthened security but still feel uneasy going outside to the shop for food. The indigenous population accounts for around 40 per cent of New Caledonia's 270,000 total inhabitants, and many have called for independence fromThree referendums on the topic have been held since 2018, with the pro-independence vote falling short on each occasion – although it boycotted the most recent poll in 2021.

Mr Desmond said he and his wife have skipped lunch for the last five days in order for their children to have enough food.
