Kiwi Israel Adesanya conquered Kelvin Gastelum in the co-main event of UFC 236 in Atlanta to claim the interim middleweight title after five rounds of pure violence.
It took almost no time at all for Gastelum to inflict more damage on Adesanya than his previous five opponents had managed collectively; dropping the 29-year-old with a monster right hand. Adesanya looked weirdly out of sorts; surviving a heap of Gastelum bombs to make it to his corner after one. And just when you thought you’d figured out how the fight was going to go, Gastelum stole back control with a fourth round that had even the most optimistic of Adesanya supporters fearing the worst.
