The women, aged 48 and 39, died after their car was sprayed with bullets near a home on Hendy Avenue, Panania.
NSW Police Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said that the shooting was an "organised, methodical murder" aimed at killing the 48-year-old, who was a mother of two, but that the 39-year-old next to her was not a target and instead an "innocent" victim.NSW Police Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said the murder of two women was organised and targeted."It's unusual and unprecedented to see two women lose their lives in this fashion.
A 16-year-old girl and 20-year-old boy were inside the car at the time and were "shaken but not injured" in the attack. He said the pair are "devastated" and eager to help police uncover why the shooting took place."Everyone should be appalled these two women have lost their lives, and on a public street."
Police said that the shooter's motive is still unclear but that the 48-year-old woman is known to police. Doherty refuted any speculation that the incident could be linked to recent gangland shootings in Sydney, and that police will "treat this on its own merit."Extensive investigations are ongoing as four burnt-out cars were found nearby shortly after the shooting, which police believe could hold clues to the circumstances surrounding the women's murder.
