Two Sydney Swans women players were allegedly caught with cocaine late last year – the first time that AFLW players have been accused of such behaviour.
Under the AFL’s illicit drugs policy, which is a medical model geared towards treatment rather than punishment, any players who are caught using illegal drugs receive a first strike, a suspended $5000 fine and counselling, and are subject to target testing.That is different from the AFL’s anti-doping code, which focuses on performance-enhancing drugs. However, a match-day positive to illicit drugs also triggers a violation under the anti-doping code.
This is the first time current AFLW players have been publicly charged with illicit drug use, while there have been a slew of recent cases in the men’s league.
