Two rescuers are dead after they went to the aid of a man who was swept off a rock while taking photos on Victoria's southwest coast.

Two rescuers who went to help a man who was swept off rocks in Victoria's southwest have died after their vessel flipped in the surf.

A man was taking photos from a rock ledge when he was swept out into the ocean at the mouth of the Sherbrook River at Port Campbell about 10.40am on Sunday. "A rescue boat was deployed to assist the swimmer, which has flipped in the surf and thrown the three occupants into the water," Victoria Police said.The third rescuer was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries and the male swimmer has been taken to hospital in a stable condition.
