The federal regulator has taken action against two more doctors as part of an investigation into a clinic following the death of a woman soon after a surgical abortion in Melbourne.
"We are comforted by the fact that AHPRA is continuing to take action," family spokesperson Suresh Rajan said.Ms Kaur and her husband, Sukhjinder Singh, had decided to have the termination for financial reasons, according to Mr Rajan. In the meantime several doctors at the clinic have been suspended by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency , which is investigating the clinic.
According to tribunal records Dr Lopes said, "ha, I didn't even have to buy you dinner first" while inserting his fingers into a patient's vagina to perform an internal examination. Dr Kenney, who was not involved in Ms Kaur's procedure, also had restrictions on her registration at the time of Ms Kaur's death, including that she must be supervised and work only three days per week.Dr Lopes and Dr Chow told the ABC they had no comment. Dr Kenney was yet to respond at the time of publication.
While AHPRA regulates health professionals, the Victorian Department of Health licenses and regulates private hospitals and has the power to fine them."If there are deficiencies in the practice systems they need to be addressed by the regulators," Mr Rajan said. "Hampton Park was the lowest cost of the private abortion providers so private abortion services are now very much out of reach."Telstra's 'massive change' has 'blindsided' workers, but will it pay off for customers and shareholders?
