Two men in Nigeria charged with sextortion offences after Australian boy takes his own life from threats asking for $500
Detectives had searched through the teen's phone as part of their inquiries and found recent messages that pointed to likely foul play as the cause of death. Investigators from the AFP-led Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation and the Joint Policing Cybercrime Coordination Centre shared their intelligence with counterparts in South Africa who passed it onto Nigerian authorities.
It is alleged the Nigerian men had worked out the Australian teen's close network, making it more plausible they would act on threats if the $500 was not handed over.
