At least two Liberal MPs were reportedly approached to vote for Llew O’Brien in Monday's deputy speaker ballot by the group of Nationals that got him over the line in the contest. Both MPs refused to comply, instead choosing to support the Coalition-put candidate Damian Drum.
Sky News political reporter Tom Connell said there was now a concern Barnaby Joyce and his supporters would be consistently vocal. Speaking with Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell, newly minted Deputy Speaker Llew O’Brien said it was “business as usual”. "As a government member, I support the same legislative agenda in the same way,” he said. "Crossing the floor is only an option if I have a strongly held view and I'd exhausted all other avenues.
