Two people have died in separate road collisions in Sydney on Saturday, in a sobering start to the school holidays.
A man died after he became trapped in his van when it collided with a tow truck at Smithfield, in Sydney’s south-west, just after 6am.At around 9.30am, another man died following a four-vehicle crash involving a utility, a sedan and an SUV at Enfield in Sydney’s inner west. The driver’s car has not yet been identified.
Reports to emergency services alleged two of the drivers were travelling north and the other two were travelling south when the crash occurred. None of the other drivers were injured, but they were taken to hospital for mandatory testing.Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam vision to contact Crime Stoppers.
With school holidays in NSW commencing on Monday, the two crashes mark the beginning of what is expected to be a busy period on Sydney’s roads. “This school holiday period there are going to be more people out on the roads and we really urge everyone to take extra care. Stay alert, stick to the speed limit and take plenty of breaks,” NSW Ambulance inspector Christian Holmes said.Last year, at least 20 people were killed on Australian roads across the four-day Easter long weekend. Six of the fatalities occurred in NSW.
