UPDATE | Three people including two young children have died after a car struck a pole and burst into flames on a busy inner-city road.

A woman and two young children have died after a car struck a pole and burst into flames on a busy inner-city Melbourne road.

“Sadly the female driver, a 35-year-old Cheltenham woman and her two passengers, an eight-year-old Cheltenham girl and a 20-month-old Cheltenham boy, died at the scene,” they said. Seconds later, they said, the vehicle burst into flames. Despite the efforts of bystanders, the trio could not be saved.
