The contest to replace British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has become personal and bitter with Liz Truss’ team attacking Rishi Sunak’s wealth, his suits and his private education.
Truss was questioned about the attack during the final two candidates’ first head-to-head clash televised by the BBC on Monday evening, London time.Truss said she was not sure how Dorries knew the origin of her earrings but she had more of an issue with Sunak’s tax agenda than his sartorial style.Sunak, a former hedge funder is wealthy in his own right but, after marrying the daughter of an Indian billionaire, is now ranked richer than the Queen.
As then-chancellor of the Exchequer, Sunak raised taxes in the UK to their highest level in 70 years and is the underdog candidate – partly for raising taxes and also for being effectively forced to resign from Johnson’s cabinet. Truss said Sunak’s plan, to start repairing the record levels of debt racked up during the pandemic, was contractionary and would tip the UK into recession.
