Australia's Tyler Wright has made history and become the world's No.1-ranked surfer after winning the Maui Pro, which had been relocated due to a fatal shark attack | sarah_keoghan SMHsport

The competition was initially scheduled for Honolua Bay but was moved to Hawaii's Banzai Pipeline after the shark attack two weeks ago on a local surfer. Wright is the first ever women’s WSL event winner at Pipeline.

"We got this opportunity through tragedy, it was devastating what happened in Maui," Wright said of the shark attack. "I want to say thank you to WSL for giving us the opportunity to surf our pipe and to make history."Getty Images "I think I will probably more soak it in later than now ... the WSL has shown leadership over this challenging few weeks to get us back here."It was a low-scoring final. Wright reached a 3.17 ride in the dying seconds to win the title after a two-wave score of 8.34. It made for a nailbiting finish as Moore had snatched the lead with a 5.40 with less than two minutes to go.
