Richmond great Trent Cotchin has made a sad admission about his greatest individual AFL honour. In 2016 Cotchin and Hawthorn champion Sam Mitchell became joint winners of the 2012 Brownlow Medal due to the fallout of Essendon’s infamous ‘supplements saga’. Former Essendon captain Jobe Watson won the Brownlow count in 2012 with 30 votes to his name. Cotchin and Mitchell were next on the board with 26 votes. But soon the doping scandal engulfed the Bombers.
” Cotchin said he felt for the Essendon players involved who were unwittingly caught up in the scandal and naturally trusted their club’s own supplements program. “Having known a few other Essendon players that were a part of that at the time — and I know you make decisions, and you need to live by those decisions — but it was a bloody tough time for that footy club, and the players that were involved in it, and all the unknowns that came with it,” he said.
