Treasurer Jim Chalmers has issued his first statement of expectations for the independent Productivity Commission.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has directed the new head of the Productivity Commission to prioritise climate change and technology, while omitting any mention of industrial relations.

Over the years, the commission has delivered federal governments dozens of reports and hundreds of recommendations, many of which remain unimplemented and consigned as politically too difficult. “The statement will help renew, refocus and renovate this core institution that is vital to the future of Australians and their economy,” Dr Chalmers said.

The Productivity Commission is the government’s independent research and advisory body on a range of economic, social and environmental issues affecting the welfare of Australians.
