Trade Minister Don Farrell has expressed optimism about the future of Australia-China relations ahead of the upcoming visit of Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Commerce Minister Wang Wentao.

Despite military tensions, Trade Minister Don Farrell has declared Australia’s booming wine trade to be a vital mechanism for dialogue ahead of high-level diplomatic meetings with Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Saturday.

Trade Minister Don Farrell has also named a wine label after himself: Farrell Wines. Picture: Matt Turner “When the government came to office about two years ago, we had $20 billion worth of trade impediments with the Chinese markets. We have now almost entirely removed all of those impediments.” However, Mr Farrell has said trade should be part of the “stabilisation process” and it gives the government a “mechanism” to negotiate with Chinese authorities.

“I’ve now had seven meetings with my Chinese counterpart Wang Wentao. This weekend will be number eight,” the Trade Minister said.
