ANALYSIS: China's authoritarian government is handling the latest health crisis better than some in the past but its insistence on total control hinders its attempts to prevent the next one.

In China 15 more people have died of coronavirus, taking the death toll on Saturday morning to 41. More than 1000 cases have been confirmedIn the UK authorities are tracking down 2000 airline passengers who flew in from Wuhan, China, in the past fortnight. No cases have been confirmed yet

As so often in China, however, the boundaries of freedom are strictly drawn. Official state media outlets have kept reporting low-key, placing news of the outbreak below reports of Xi Jinping's latest marvellous speech. For now, non-state media have had their leash loosened, but they are ever-alert as to when it shortens again. Whether it is air pollution, anti-foreign rage or product contamination, the pattern is the same.

Where cover-ups become tricky is when they hit international scrutiny. It was New Zealand that blew the whistle on the poisoned formula scandal, just as it was the international backlash that made the suppression of SARS impossible and therefore highly politically damaging to the Communist Party. Clearly, the party has learnt this lesson when it comes to managing disease.Domestically, however, Chinese citizens know that they rarely get the full story from their media or government.

Chinese authorities censor the figure by controlling the dispatch of test kit, leaving much more unconfirmed cases waiting for testing.

The Australian Government needs to appoint a capable politician that understands Chinese culture, is useful, respected by the community and would not be scared if they caught the coronavirus as they would be taking one for the team. That person has to be...Gladys Liu.

HK_not_safe If you trust the Chinese figures on infections & deaths you are naive or damned stupid.

Say we have had 20 flights a day from China each with three hundred passengers for two weeks thats 84k passengers. We currently have four cases - roughly one per 20k arrivals. On that very rough basis China should be reporting 50k-100k cases. They are lying.

Think this is incorrect story. I would rather concentrate on what Australia is doing on current Corona Virus outbreak in Melbourne, what is government instruction to precautionary measures (sorry it is weekend and public holiday so who cares) and what are preventive measures.

You just saw the outside not in the side

I always thought China would end us.

How the coronavirus started in China — and why that's actually a saving graceThe emergence of a new coronavirus in China has once again raised the spectre of a global pandemic. Newly emerging viruses may well be a sentinel of a system that is out of balance. Mother nature hitting back telling China to stop eating the rare and endangered species coronovirus CoronavirusOutbreak WuhanCoronavirus So the rate of increase is directly related to our increase in meat consumption. 'The rate of emergence of new human pathogens appears to be accelerating. A recent study suggested that over half of all emergences are associated with food production.' 1/2 It would be good practice to support statements w/ science literature, e.g., that Whooping Cough came from dogs. I’ve not read that anywhere before, & cannot find any support for that now. There is Kennel Cough, but that’s not caused by Bortadella Pertussis. Factcheck please!

China builds 10-day hospital for virusChina is swiftly building a hospital dedicated to treating patients infected with a new virus that has killed 26 people, sickened hundreds and prompted unprecedented lockdowns of cities home to millions of people during the country’s most important holiday. Referring to it as a ‘hospital’ might be a stretch Building a hospital in ten days, now what could possibly go wrong. Maybe not a 'proper' hospital but a 'field hospital' That’s a worry. When china builds something in ten days.....could be more dangerous than the virus itself.
