More than 100 Torquay residents have been forced to spend another night away from home amid fears the nearby dam could collapse. 9News

More than 100 Victorian residents will spend another night away from home amid fears a nearby dam could collapse.

Homeowners in Torquay were told to evacuate their homes around 2am this morning, after authorities found that a nearby dam was leaking. There was a risk that the walls could break, potentially send 180 mega litres of water through a nearby estate.Residents will be stranded for another night.Leaks in the walls were discovered late last night.

The cause of the leak is still unknown and dam engineers are currently working to ensure the site is safe. Anne Howard, Acting CEO of the Surf Coast Shire Council, told 9News in a statement that the location of the dam would have been factored in before the housing estate was built."The proximity of the houses to the dam would have been considered at the time the development was approved," Ms Howard said.

Residents evacuated amid concerns dam could collapseEngineers are worried a 180-megalitre dam on private property at Torquay, on Victoria's Surf Coast, could have a 'catastrophic failure' prompting the evacuation of about 150 residents. The same thing happened with a 5-acre 30m-deep dam I had which, had it burst, would have washed away a bridge and houses around Spring Creek. I desperately phoned the Council, SES - none could/would help. Fortunately, a neighbour with an excavator fixed it. Here you go ABC. Flag on Pintail Drive, and the only 5 acre dam in Torquay.
