Exclusive: 'All over red rover': Top unis drive biggest overhaul in 30 years

Australia's top universities are gearing up for the sector's biggest overhaul in decades, with the risks posed to research by plunging overseas student income driving them to consider industry-wide reforms such as mergers and specialist universities.

It comes as NSW agreed to guarantee $750 million in loans to help the state's universities recover from the COVID crisis, but said they would be conditional on universities making their operations more sustainable.

"This process is not about what's good for the Group of Eight. It's about what we can do for the nation."Some commentators argue smaller universities should concentrate their research into specific specialist areas, such as marine science at James Cook University or Antarctic research at the University of Tasmania, and increase their focus on teaching.

"To take our research funding will do nothing for the Group of Eight, and it will really hurt regional universities," she said. Asked when he would need to make difficult decisions on research, Dr Spence said the university could "ride out" the $470 million hole in its budget this year.

No. Giving money to the building industry will not fix the problem. This will not fix university job losses, for example. Does not reopen stores that have closed The first home builder idea is lazy thinking on behalf of the governmenf. The government needs to ask every business that closed its doors, temporarily or permanently how many people did not get JobKeeper. It needs to look at payroll tax submissions to find the dips and reach out to businesses that have been hit.
